CAPE TOWN – The charismatic musician and reality TV star, Papa Penny, born Eric Nkovani, has officially taken his seat as a Member of Parliament under former President Jacob Zuma’s MK party.
The swearing-in ceremony took place this afternoon, marking a significant moment in South African politics.
Papa Penny, known for his vibrant personality and cultural advocacy, joins a lineup of notable figures who were also sworn in as MPs. Among them were former PRASA CEO Lucky Montana, former Transnet CEO Siyabonga Gama, businessman Jimmy Manyi, ex-Eskom CEO Brian Molefe, and former State Security Agency executive Thulani Gamede.
The ceremony, held in Cape Town, was a blend of formality and celebration as the new MPs pledged their commitment to serving the nation. Papa Penny, who has long been a cultural icon, expressed his gratitude and determination to bring the voice of ordinary South Africans to the parliamentary floor.
“This is not just about politics; it’s about representing our culture, our people, and making sure their voices are heard,” said Papa Penny after the ceremony.
The MK party, which has recently gained traction under Zuma’s leadership, is seen as a platform for those advocating for radical socio-economic transformation and preserving the legacy of the struggle veterans.
The inclusion of prominent figures like Papa Penny and others highlights the party’s strategy to merge cultural influence with political action, aiming to resonate with a broader base of South Africans.
As the newly sworn-in MPs prepare to tackle the challenges facing the country, all eyes will be on how figures like Papa Penny will transition from their previous roles into the political arena.
