PRETORIA – The South African Police Service (SAPS) has announced that it has received a total of 334 765 graduate applications as part of its ongoing recruitment process aimed at enlisting 5 500 new police traineesacross the country’s nine provinces.

According to the SAPS, by the closing date of 18 July 2025, 334 765 graduate applications were received in total, with hundreds of thousands of graduates holding qualifications in policing, law, forensic investigation, and other related disciplines.

The selection process is currently in its first phase, during which thousands of applicants are undergoing psychometric and integrity testing assessments.

SAPS said the multi-phase selection process will further include physical fitness evaluations, vetting, and medical examinations to ensure that only the most capable and suitable candidates are selected to serve.

While all eligible young South Africans were encouraged to apply, the service indicated that preference will be given to applicants who possess tertiary qualifications (NQF Level 6 or higher) and those holding a valid driver’s licence.

SAPS has called on applicants to remain patient as the recruitment teams continue with the assessments and verification processes. Suitable candidates will be contacted directly once the initial phases are completed.

Training for the successful recruits is expected to commence in 2026, with the exact date to be announced in due course.

The recruitment drive forms part of SAPS’s broader effort to strengthen police visibility, enhance service delivery, and build a professional and well-trained police force.
