Police in the Western Cape arrested three people in separate operations in Atlantis, Strand and Lavender Hill. Officers seized a pistol, ammunition, crystal meth and Mandrax tablets, the South African Police Service (SAPS) said.

The arrests came from a search warrant in Robinvale, a stop-and-search operation in Strand and crime prevention patrols in Lavender Hill, according to SAPS. The police shared the details in a post on X on Tuesday, 27 October.

In the first case, members of the Atlantis Crime Prevention Unit went to a house in Coly Lane, Robinvale. They carried out a search warrant on the morning of Monday, 26 October.

Police said they acted after they received information that there was a firearm at the property. During the search, officers found a 9mm pistol and 140 rounds of ammunition hidden in a bedroom.

The firearm was taken by police. An 18-year-old man was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm and illegal possession of ammunition, SAPS said.

He is expected to appear in the Atlantis Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, 28 October, on those charges.

In a separate case, members of Public Order Police were running stop-and-search operations in Onverwacht Street, Strand. Police said they stopped next to a man who then allegedly tried to get away from them.

Officers caught the 36-year-old man and searched him. They found a plastic packet with 100 grams of crystal meth, as well as cash, according to SAPS.

He was arrested for possession of drugs. Police said he was due to appear in the Strand Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, 27 October.

The third arrest took place in Lavender Hill. Members of Operation Prosper were on crime prevention patrols in the area because of ongoing gang violence, police said.

During the patrol, officers searched a woman in Ashley Court. SAPS said they allegedly found 28 Mandrax tablets and 13 half-tablets of Mandrax in her possession.

She was arrested for possession of drugs. Police did not give her age or name.

Police said the three cases were not linked to each other. SAPS shared the arrests as part of its work to take guns and drugs off the streets in the province.

The woman arrested in Lavender Hill was due to appear in the Wynberg Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, 27 October, on the drug charge.
