The United States came from behind to beat the Internationals 17-13 on Sunday and win the Presidents Cup for the 11th time in a row, News24 reported.
The Americans trailed 10.5-7.5 going into the 12 singles matches at Medinah Country Club near Chicago. They won nine of those matches and drew one.
“I’m just so damn proud of this team,” US captain Brandt Snedeker said. “All these guys, they fought for each other. They fought for this country. They fought for this team.”
Jacob Bridgeman made the winning point. He holed a four-foot par putt on the 18th hole to beat Australian Min Woo Lee 1-up.
Bridgeman won his second PGA Tour title the week before. He fell behind for the first time with a bogey on the 15th. He then won the 16th and 18th holes with pars.
“It was the coolest moment,” Bridgeman said. “I felt like I held in my emotions all day. To let it out on the last hole is pretty sweet.”
US President Donald Trump visited the course on the final day. Snedeker said Trump should get the credit for the win.
“He told me [he] was going to bring some energy today for you guys. You guys need it,” Snedeker said. “And I told him if we did this, he gets all the credit. So thank you, President Trump.”
Internationals captain Geoff Ogilvy of Australia said the day was very close. “It was on a knife edge all day,” he said. “It’s a very difficult thing to beat the US in singles in the US.”
“I don’t think I’d do anything differently,” Ogilvy said. “It sort of drifted the wrong way all day.”
South Africa’s Christiaan Bezuidenhout lost his singles match 1-up to Chris Gotterup.
Cameron Young earned the first US point on the day. He beat Japan’s Ryo Hisatsune 3 and 2, and made a 32-foot birdie putt on the 16th to close out the match.
Justin Thomas had lost all three of his earlier Cup singles matches. This time he won the first four holes and beat Canada’s Corey Conners 5 and 3.
World number one Scottie Scheffler made five birdies in the first 10 holes. He beat Colombia’s Nico Echavarria 2 and 1.
The Internationals won two singles matches. South Korea’s Tom Kim beat US Open champion Wyndham Clark 3 and 2. Im Sung-jae made four birdies in the last six holes to beat Sam Burns 3 and 1.
The US took a 13.5-12.5 lead when Patrick Cantlay beat Australian Adam Scott 2 and 1. Cantlay needed a 57-foot birdie putt on the 16th to stay in control.
Moments later, Collin Morikawa beat Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama 1-up when Matsuyama missed a 15-foot par putt on the 18th.
The Americans now have 14 wins, one loss and one tie in the event, which is played every two years. The team has eight of the world’s top 11 ranked golfers.
The Internationals last won in 1998 in Australia. The two teams shared the trophy in South Africa in 2003.
