GA-MOGOBOYA – In a moving and emotional ceremony, the Tlhabine community and broader Greater Tzaneen football fraternity came together on Sunday, 20 July 2025, to bid farewell to one of its most beloved figures, Mmamonaiwa Naiwa Lesailane.
Lesailane, affectionately known as “Naiwa,” was laid to rest in her home village of Tlhabine, Ga-Mogoboya, following her passing on Monday, 14 July 2025, after a brief illness. She was 49.
Local football clubs, family members, friends, and community leaders gathered in large numbers to honour the life and legacy of a woman who dedicated decades to grassroots football development — particularly in creating spaces for young talent and promoting women’s participation in sport.
Naiwa was a well-known figure in the community, having worked tirelessly with clubs such as Bancock FC and Lebaleng Shining Stars. Her influence extended beyond the football pitch — she was a mentor, organiser, and voice for equitable opportunities in sport, particularly in a male-dominated field.
“She led with passion and commitment,” said one speaker during the service. “Even when resources were limited, she found a way to make things happen for the love of the game.”
Residents of Mmalehlakana Village, where she lived, described her as a community pillar whose selfless efforts helped shape the lives of many young players.
Though her loss leaves a deep void, her contributions to local football will not be forgotten. As one mourner put it, “Naiwa was not just a sports administrator — she was a trailblazer for women in football.”
The funeral was filled with heartfelt tributes, music, and a final guard of honour by local players and officials, symbolising the impact she had on the football landscape in Tlhabine and beyond.
