SANDTON– The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has swooped on the luxury Sandhurst home of businessman Hangwani Morgan Maumela, who is accused of being at the centre of the R2.3 billion Tembisa Hospital corruption scandal.
The early morning raid formed part of a major asset forfeiture operation targeting properties, vehicles, and other high-value assets linked to Maumela’s extensive business network. Among the items seized were luxury vehicles, including Lamborghinis, and valuable artworks.
“The SIU confirms an operation at a Sandhurst home connected to our Tembisa Hospital Capture investigation, as part of implementing investigation outcomes and managing consequences. Further updates will follow once legal processes are complete,” the SIU said in a statement.
The Sandhurst property, which reportedly includes a car wash and barber shop, is one of several assets under investigation.
The SIU believes funds looted from Tembisa Hospital were funneled through a network of shell companies and service providers connected to Maumela.
Investigations have revealed that Maumela’s network received over R816 million through suspicious purchase orders at Tembisa Hospital.
The broader SIU probe found that more than R2 billion was irregularly extracted from the facility over several years through inflated tenders and fraudulent procurement processes.
The Asset Forfeiture Unit (AFU) has also frozen multiple properties and vehicles believed to be proceeds of the corrupt schemes.
The SIU has indicated that more raids may follow as part of the ongoing investigation.
