The South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued a Yellow Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms over the south-western parts of Limpopo on Thursday, 15 October 2026.

Thundershowers were forecast for most parts of the country. The weather service said the storms would be severe in Limpopo.

According to SAWS, the storms could cause localised flooding. Heavy downpours, damaging winds, hail and lightning could also put property and infrastructure in danger.

At the same time, a heatwave with high temperatures was set to continue in parts of KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape.

SAWS said the heatwave would affect places in the northern parts of KwaZulu-Natal until Friday. In the Eastern Cape, it was expected in the Chris Hani, OR Tambo and Alfred Nzo district municipalities until Saturday.

The weather service also warned of hot to very hot conditions in the eastern parts of KwaZulu-Natal until Friday. It said these conditions would be extremely uncomfortable.

In the SAWS colour-coded system, yellow means a moderate risk that calls for caution and awareness. Orange means a higher risk, which needs more attention and preparation.

The numbers show how likely it is that the weather will cause harm. SAWS said levels 2 and 6 are high, level 5 is medium, and levels 4 and 8 are low.

In Limpopo, the day was expected to start fine before turning partly cloudy and hot. It would be very hot in places on the Lowveld, in the Limpopo Valley and in the western Bushveld. Isolated thundershowers were forecast over the south-western half in the afternoon.

KwaZulu-Natal was set to be partly cloudy and hot to very hot. The north-east was expected to be extremely hot, with isolated showers and thundershowers in most areas.

Gauteng was forecast to be partly cloudy and warm, but hot in the far north. Isolated showers and thundershowers were also expected in the province.

Mpumalanga would start fine before becoming partly cloudy and warm to hot. Isolated afternoon thundershowers were expected over the Highveld.

In North West, the weather was set to be fine and warm to hot. Isolated afternoon showers and thundershowers were forecast in the east. The Free State had a similar outlook, with isolated showers over its far eastern parts.

The Northern Cape was expected to be fine to partly cloudy, windy and warm to hot. The Western Cape was forecast to be cloudy and cool in the west at first, and partly cloudy and warm elsewhere.

In the western half of the Eastern Cape, fog patches were expected early before the weather turned warm to hot. The eastern half was set to see isolated showers and thundershowers in the east. It would stay cool in places along the coast south of Kei Mouth.
