DZUMERI VILLAGE – Motorists were left stranded on Thursday, October 30 after heavy rain washed away the alternative (bypass) bridge on the R529 at Dzumeri Village, between Risaba and Giyani.

The gravel bypass had been serving as a temporary route after a section of the R529 road at Ndhambi Village, located just after the Dzumeri Taxi Rank, was closed to traffic when a bridge was destroyed by heavy rainfall in February this year.

The sudden collapse of the makeshift bridge has disrupted movement in the area, leaving many commuters and motorists stuck while authorities assess the damage.

The R529 road, which connects Ndhambi Village to several surrounding communities, is a vital route for locals, school transport, and business operations.

Motorists have been urged to use alternative routes as authorities, along with SANRAL, work to repair or replace the damaged structure.

Residents have expressed frustration, calling for urgent intervention to restore safe passage and prevent further disruptions, especially as the rainy season intensifies.
