MAHIKENG – In a shocking and gruesome incident, a 25-year-old man allegedly hacked his 48-year-old mother to death using a shovel at Mosiane View village in Mahikeng, North West Province.
The brutal attack occurred around 11:00 on Saturday, 04 October 2025. According to eyewitnesses, the young man can be seen in a video continuously assaulting his mother with a shovel, even after she was no longer responding.
It is alleged that a neighbour, in an attempt to stop the attack, fired a shot at the suspect. The suspect was hit and later succumbed to his injuries. The motive behind the incident remains unknown at this stage.
The Acting Provincial Commissioner of Police in North West, Major General Patrick Asaneng, condemned the incident, describing it as “sadistic, gruesome and senseless.”
“The sadistic, gruesome and senseless death of a mother at the hands of her son is symptomatic of the scourge of satanic ritual practices or drug addiction to which most young people are exposed, and which unfortunately are often ignored by parents and a nonchalant, apathetic society,” said Asaneng.
“There is no way that it can be said that there were no warning signs in the suspect’s life, given the gratuitous demonic killing of his own mother. Even though he himself died after being shot, the SAPS Occult Related Crimes Unit will fully investigate this case to determine the cause and effect of this heinous tragedy.”
Police investigations are ongoing, with authorities not ruling out the possibility of drug influence or other substances contributing to the suspect’s violent behavior.
