POLOKWANE-The Limpopo Department of Economic Development, Environment and Tourism (LEDET) has issued a stern warning to liquor license holders, condemning in the strongest terms the sale of alcohol to minors and the presence of underage individuals in liquor outlets.

The department emphasized that, in terms of the law, liquor license holders are required to prevent minors — anyone under the age of 18 — from entering licensed liquor premises for alcohol sales, consumption, or entertainment of any kind. Failure to comply, whether intentional or not, constitutes a direct violation of the Liquor Act.

Liquor outlet owners are reminded that it is their responsibility to verify the age of every patron. Establishments that share buildings with spaza shops must ensure clear demarcation and separate entrances. Minors entering spaza shops to purchase essentials must not have visual or physical access to liquor outlet sections.

The department, working together with the South African Police Service (SAPS), will continue conducting compliance raids throughout the festive season. Any liquor outlet found contravening the Limpopo Liquor Act will face serious consequences, including the possible revocation of operating licenses and closure of the establishment.

Parents have also been warned against sending minors to purchase alcohol on their behalf, while minors are urged to refuse such instructions.

Authorities caution that the presence of minors in liquor outlets exposes them to serious risks, including vulnerability to abuse and possible sexual assault by intoxicated patrons.

The department reiterated its commitment to protecting children and ensuring strict enforcement of liquor laws across the province.
