GA-MOLEPO – A tragic morning accident has left the community of Laastehoop in shock after a Grade R learner from Mamothalo Primary School was fatally run over by a school transport bus on Friday morning.
According to witnesses, the horrific incident occurred while learners were preparing to board the school bus that takes them to and from school daily. It is alleged that the little one accidentally moved too close to the moving bus and was struck, dying instantly at the scene.
Community member Masilo Abram Mogoboya described the incident as deeply painful, saying the tragedy has shaken residents and parents in the area.
“This is heartbreaking. We are appealing to all parents and transport operators to work together to ensure the safety of children when boarding or getting off the bus,” said Mogoboya.
Ward 5 Councillor Kgala Legodi confirmed the incident, adding that the municipality will provide emotional and counselling support to the bereaved family and learners who witnessed the tragedy.
“We will stand with the family during this difficult time and ensure that other affected learners receive trauma counselling,” Legodi said.
The child, whose name is being withheld until the family has been formally notified, was described by teachers as a cheerful and kind learner who loved school.
The incident has once again raised concerns about the safety of learners using private school transport in rural areas, with many calling for stricter safety measures and supervision when children board school buses.
Police have opened a case of culpable homicide and investigations are underway to determine the exact circumstances that led to the accident.
The Mamothalo Primary School community, parents and neighbours have since gathered at the bereaved family’s home to offer support and condolences.
