LOUIS TRICHARDT – Five people tragically lost their lives in a horrific multi-vehicle crash on the N1 near Louis Trichardt on Friday afternoon.
The accident occurred next to Binlavin Farm, approximately six kilometres from Louis Trichardt town, within the Makhado Municipality in the Vhembe District.
According to authorities, the crash involved five vehicles — two trucks, a sedan, a bakkie and a 22-seater bus. Emergency responders confirmed that five people died at the scene. Fifteen passengers sustained minor injuries, while seven others suffered moderate injuries.
MEC responsible for Transport and Community Safety, Florence Radzilani Mathye, expressed condolences to the affected families.
“On behalf of the Department, I wish to extend my sincere condolences to the families of those who perished on the scene and wish the injured a speedy recovery,” said MEC Mathye.
A preliminary investigation suggests that loss of control and excessive speed may have contributed to the crash. Authorities say a detailed report will be released once investigations have been finalised.
Motorists using the N1 corridor are urged to remain cautious as traffic incidents continue to rise during the busy festive season.
