DULLSTROOM – The death toll from the horrific crash involving a minibus taxi and a GWM Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) on the R540 near Dullstroom has risen to seven, authorities confirmed. The accident occurred on Saturday afternoon, 25 October 2025, in Mpumalanga.
According to reports, six passengers from the taxi were declared dead at the scene, while the seventh victim succumbed to injuries later at Lydenburg Hospital. Eight other people sustained serious injuries — seven passengers and the SUV driver — while the taxi driver escaped with minor injuries.
Preliminary information indicates that the victims were five community members from Kgautšwane and one from Ohrigstad. The group was reportedly travelling from Kgautšwane to Gauteng when the accident occurred.
The Fetakgomo Tubatse Local Municipality has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss of lives.
“We are heartbroken by this tragic accident and extend our heartfelt condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones,” said Mayor Cllr Eddie Maila.
Mayor Maila also expressed gratitude to Limpopo Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba, whom he briefed immediately after the incident. He commended the Premier for promptly engaging with her Mpumalanga counterpart to fast-track support and coordination for the survivors and the affected families.
A memorial service for the victims will be held at Kgautšwane Community Centre on Thursday, 30 October 2025, starting at 10h00.
The municipality has urged motorists to exercise extreme caution on the roads, especially as the festive season approaches, to prevent further loss of lives.
