PRETORIA -In a move that has garnered admiration online, Democratic Alliance (DA) leader and current Minister of Agriculture, Hon. John Steenhuisen, has announced his plans to return to university and further his studies.
Steenhuisen recently visited the University of South Africa (Unisa), where he met with the institution’s Principal and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Puleng LenkaBula, and other members of the university’s management.
Following their discussions, Steenhuisen expressed a renewed commitment to completing his studies, a goal he had previously set aside.
Steenhuisen, who initially began studying politics at Unisa, never completed his qualifications.
Now, holding a significant role in the government, he shared that he has recognized the importance of enhancing his skills to better fulfill his responsibilities.
“Now, holding a key office in government, there are certain skills that I would like to acquire that would help me do my job better, and Unisa gives me the flexibility to work and study,” Steenhuisen stated.
He noted that his studies would focus on management, public policy, governance, and change management—areas he sees as crucial to his role.
The Minister of Agriculture’s decision to pursue further education comes amid an ongoing public conversation about educational qualifications in government leadership.
Many social media users have commended Steenhuisen for prioritizing education despite his demanding position.
Steenhuisen’s announcement also appears to have had an impact on others in government. Inspired by the DA leader’s decision, Steenhuisen’s predecessor in the Ministry of Agriculture recently shared his own plan to pursue studies in 2025.
The minister had previously faced online criticism for holding only a Senior Certificate (Matric) but now intends to return to school.
Steenhuisen’s dedication has sparked a wave of positive reactions on social media, with many applauding his commitment to lifelong learning.
His efforts to balance his role in government with academic growth send a powerful message on the importance of education, particularly in the field of public service.
As he embarks on this journey, many South Africans are watching with interest and pride, hoping his example inspires other leaders to continually seek growth and development in their roles.
