TZANEEN – South Africa’s U20 national team, Amajita, made history on Sunday evening after clinching their first-ever U20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title in Egypt — and at the helm of this remarkable achievement was Bolobedu-born coach Raymond Mdaka.

The team secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Morocco in the final, with Gomolemo Kekana scoring the match-winning goal in Cairo. The result marks a milestone for South African football and elevates Coach Mdaka to legendary status in the sport.

Born and raised in Ga-Mokgwathi village in Bolobedu, Limpopo, Mdaka’s path to continental glory is one defined by perseverance, humility, and passion.

Before transitioning into coaching, Mdaka spent over two decades in the education sector. His love for football eventually led him to pursue a coaching career, where he quickly rose through the ranks.

He holds a CAF A License, one of the highest coaching certifications in Africa, allowing him to coach at both national and international levels. His early coaching experience includes a stint with the now-defunct Dynamos FCin Giyani alongside the late coaching icon Jacob “Cellular” Sakala.

Mdaka’s more recent experience includes serving as interim and assistant coach at Marumo Gallants, and he continues to contribute to football as a SAFA coaching instructor, helping shape the future of South African coaching talent.

Throughout the AFCON tournament, Mdaka’s leadership has been widely praised. His approach, rooted in discipline, tactical sharpness, and calm under pressure, proved vital in guiding the young squad to success.

“We always have to dictate the terms,” Mdaka told reporters after the match, reflecting his belief in playing proactive, confident football even in high-pressure situations.

The victory not only secured the continental title but also earned Amajita a spot at the upcoming FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile, where they will face the world’s elite youth footballing nations.

Mdaka’s triumph has ignited immense pride across Limpopo and South Africa, standing as a testament to the power of grassroots development, community support, and coaching excellence.

As preparations begin for the global stage, the spotlight remains on the calm and collected coach from Bolobedu, whose journey has become an inspiration to aspiring footballers and coaches across the nation.
