Rapper Blxckie says his second album is coming “very soon”. He told Drum that fans will hear how much his voice and style have grown.
Blxckie spoke to the magazine at Scorpion Kings Live, where he performed. He said he had already submitted the new album.
“People can hear the change in my voice and the amount of genres that I’ve tapped into,” he said.
He said his growth as an artist will be at the centre of the new project.
Blxckie released his debut album, B4Now, five years ago. It was certified gold and included the hit Big Time Sh’lappa.
The debut also featured collaborations with Nasty C and LucasRaps.
He said he has become more melodic over the past five years. “I think the album just isolates that and keeps my voice so people can hear it,” he said.
The interview took place after his set at the second edition of Scorpion Kings Live. Drum described the night as one of the most successful showcases in South African music history.
The magazine said a production of that size shows local creators they can move past old limits.
Blxckie credited amapiano with opening doors for South African music at home and around the world.
“Amapiano has been leading the way in terms of South African music,” he said.
He said big shows like Scorpion Kings Live show other local artists what is possible.
“It’s showing the rest of us that it’s possible to do something at this scale, as long as the music is there, as long as the people are ready to enjoy that type of thing,” he said.
He said money and planning make such shows work. “The production and the budget, most importantly, is there, then I feel like it’s a good example for the rest of South African music and the rest of South African artists,” he said.
Before a show, Blxckie keeps his routine simple. He told Drum he has “a shot or two” and then feeds off the crowd.
“I just hype myself by just looking at the crowd and seeing how they’re feeling, get myself to that level,” he said.
Blxckie did not give a release date for the new album.
