PRETORIA-The Balobedu Royal Council is taking legal action to prevent the airing of the drama series “Queen Modjadji,” set to premiere on Sunday, July 14.
The Council, led by Chief Gabriel Rasebotsa, has approached the High Court in Pretoria for an interdict against the series’ broadcast on Mzansi Magic.
Chief Rasebotsa and the Royal Council argue that the series, which focuses on the reign of Queen Modjadji the First, contains significant historical inaccuracies and has not been sanctioned by the reigning queen, Masalanabo Modjadji VII, or the Balobedu Royal Nation. “This series has not been approved by the Balobedu Royal council nor consented to by Her Majesty, Rain Queen Masalanabo Modjadji VII. There was no consultation with either the Balobedu Royal Nation or Her Majesty by Multichoice or the producer, Duma KaNdlovu,” stated Rasebotsa.
Additionally, the Council expressed concerns that the series would further undermine and marginalize the Khelobedu language and the Balobedu people.
They believe that the portrayal in the series misrepresents the history and life of Queen Modjadji, which could have detrimental effects on the cultural heritage of the Balobedu community.
The court hearing for the application to halt the broadcast is currently underway at the Pretoria High Court
