Kraaifontein content creator and rapper Big Meg said her black mourning outfit at the Content Creator Awards was planned as a message to her rivals.

The 21-year-old, whose real name is Chesrae Megan, has more than 1.1 million followers across her main platforms. She spoke to Bona about her career, her music and her red carpet look.

“The concept was very intentional. I didn’t just want to wear a beautiful outfit to the awards; I wanted to make a statement,” Megan told Bona.

She arrived at the awards in a black gown and a veil. She called the concept “Big Meg in Mourning: The Funeral of the Opponents.” According to Bona, the outfit stood for mourning her competition, not a personal loss.

The look drew wide attention on South African social media. Megan said many people did not understand it at first.

“Seeing the reaction online was honestly amazing because people didn’t really understand the concept, leaving them with think pieces. I love that I could create a conversation and have them wonder what every detail means,” she said.

Bona reported that Megan uses fashion as part of her storytelling. She builds characters and invites fans to work out the meaning behind her choices.

Megan said her growth came from steady work and a change in how she saw her content.

“I stopped seeing content creation as something I was just doing and started treating it as a business and a career,” she said. She added that consistency is just as important as talent.

She said her audience has grown, but her personality, humour and confidence have stayed the same.

“I want people to grow with me, not watch me become someone else just to keep them entertained,” Megan said.

Megan also raps. She said content creation and music do different jobs for her.

“Content creation has helped me develop my personality in front of an audience, understand entertainment, and recognise what makes people connect with something,” she said. “Music allows me to express another side of myself. It’s where I can be more vulnerable, confident, outspoken, and experimental.”

According to Bona, she plans to grow as a multilingual music artist. She also wants to work on bigger fashion collaborations.

“I want to build something that lasts beyond algorithms and follower counts,” Megan said. “I want to create opportunities, inspire other young creatives, and leave a legacy that people can associate with originality, fearlessness, and breaking boundaries.”
