Origin Project Management has worked on some of South Africa’s best-known shopping centres, including Mall of Africa, Sandton City’s Diamond Walk and Menlyn Shopping Centre, Daily Investor reported.
The company manages construction projects from planning and design through to building and completion. Its work covers retail, commercial, hospitality and residential developments in South Africa and other African markets.
Origin said its Sandton City projects needed careful coordination so that retailers could keep trading while building work went on.
At Sandton City, the work included a reconfiguration of the mall and its courts, plus an extension on the south-eastern side. This added 30,000m² of gross lettable area and a new shopping circuit across two levels.
The project also brought in the Protea Court pedestrian entrance. It required 12 tenants to move and made space for 72 more shops. Much of the refurbishment took place while the centre stayed open.
Origin also created the Diamond Walk, which links Sandton City to the Sandton Sun Hotel. The luxury section was designed for international brands such as Louis Vuitton, Prada, Gucci and Zegna.
The company also managed the refurbishment of the Sandton City food court. That job included replacing the roof while tenants kept operating.
Mall of Africa, in Waterfall City in Midrand, has 131,000m² of lettable retail area and more than 300 shops. The wider complex has a gross building area of 485,000m².
In Pretoria, Origin worked on the second phase of Menlyn Park Shopping Centre. This involved moving Checkers and other shops into the Phase 1 section, updating finishes and adding a northern parking facility.
At Nelson Mandela Square in Sandton, the company managed a refurbishment of the shared areas and office tower lobbies. It also upgraded the outside square and formalised outdoor seating for restaurants.
Outside South Africa, Origin worked on West Hills Mall in Ghana, a shopping centre of 27,700m². In Cameroon, it worked on Douala Grand Mall, which has 160 shops and 22 restaurants.
The Douala centre has 18,000m² of lettable retail space across two levels. It also has a Carrefour supermarket, a spa and a five-screen cinema complex with seating for 1,000 people.
The business dates back to 1993, when Neil Graham & Associates was set up to offer project management services. It became GHC Africa in 2005 as it grew into sub-Saharan Africa.
Origin Project Management was established in 2015. At the same time, GHC Africa began trading as Origin International, which expanded to 15 African destinations. The group added services through a 2023 relationship with Milestone Time Management.
Origin describes itself as a specialised consulting company. Its work includes appointing project managers, coordinating professional teams and overseeing budgets and programmes.
Its other retail projects include work at Alberton City, Cresta Shopping Centre, Southgate Mall, Tyger Valley and Westgate Shopping Centre. The company has also worked on facilities at the University of the Witwatersrand and the University of Johannesburg.
