Prince William said he once wanted to join the police or work as a DJ, in a rare visit to a BBC chat show, IOL reported.
The Prince of Wales sat down with comedian Graham Norton for an episode set to air on Friday evening. He went on the show to promote his Earthshot Prize, which supports work on the environment.
Norton asked William if he ever dreamed of a different job instead of becoming king. “I did want to be a policeman when I was younger. I thought I could make a good one,” William told Norton.
He added that he also went through “a phase of wanting to be a DJ”. He then admitted, “I wasn’t very good.”
The BBC reported there were “cheers and gasps from the audience” when William walked out as a surprise guest.
He wore a blue suit, shirt and tie. Photos shared before the show on the Instagram account he runs with his wife showed him laughing loudly.
William sat on the sofa next to actresses Cate Blanchett and Hannah Waddingham. Conservationist Robert Irwin also joined them. All three are involved in the Earthshot Prize.
During the chat, William said his family loves The Celebrity Traitors, a reality show that is currently top of the ratings.
He also said he was a “big fan” of director Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight films about Batman. He called the trilogy “psychologically dark and deep”.
The celebrity magazine Hello wrote that William is the first working royal to appear on a British talk show. Norton did interview Sarah Ferguson when she still had a royal title. She is the former wife of William’s uncle, the former prince Andrew.
The Graham Norton Show is now in its 33rd series. It is the BBC’s most watched chat show, and Madonna is among its recent guests. Norton is known for his famous guests and for gently teasing them.
The Earthshot Prize was launched in 2020. It backs projects that help deal with problems such as climate change.
Like in past years, each winner this year will receive one million pounds, about 1.3 million US dollars. The organisers said the money is meant “to accelerate the impact of their innovative solutions”.
William has said nothing in public about the return to Britain of his brother, Prince Harry. The two are estranged.
In an interview with GQ magazine, Harry said he wanted things to “work out” with his father, King Charles III, and with William.
William will present this year’s Earthshot Prize in Mumbai, India, on 17 November.
