British saxophonist Courtney Pine said he recorded a new session with Mick Jagger for The Rolling Stones. His comments have raised hopes among fans that the band could be making new music.
Pine spoke about the session on the BBC Radio 3 show Private Passions. He did not say whether the recording was for a new studio album.
“I’ve just done another session a couple of weeks ago with him for The Rolling Stones,” Pine said on the show.
Pine has worked with Jagger before. He played saxophone on Wandering Spirit, the singer’s solo album from 1993.
He also had kind words for the rock star. “Mick’s an amazing artist. That whole pop world is completely different to anything that I know,” Pine said.
Pine shared a story about that earlier album. He said the first version he played on was thrown away. He was then asked to fly to Los Angeles to record a new version.
“I played on one version of Mick Jagger’s solo album and they threw it away and then I get a call, ‘Can I come out to LA tomorrow and play on another version of the same album?’ Mick Jagger? Of course!” he said.
The news follows comments Jagger made in June. He told NME that he had already started writing new songs.
The singer was asked if he had another album in him after Foreign Tongues, which came out earlier this year. “Yeah, it could be a trio [of records]. I’ve already started writing songs anyway,” Jagger said.
Jagger said not every song he writes will go to The Rolling Stones. He said some songs could suit other artists, such as the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
“I’m very open-minded to it. I’ve got a lot of stuff, and not all of it’s suitable for The Rolling Stones. It shouldn’t stop me writing them, you know. If you get an idea, just write it,” he told NME.
A return to touring looks less certain. Guitarist Ronnie Wood told NME that he and Jagger want to play live again. He said Keith Richards is less keen on going back on the road.
“I know Mick is busting to go, and Keith is not busting to go. And you’ve got to have everybody’s enthusiasm to do it,” Wood said.
Wood said he would be ready when the other members agreed to go ahead. “When my compadres say, ‘Let’s go’, I’ll be ready. I’ve got no plans yet though,” he said.
The band has not confirmed a new album, according to IOL. Fans will need to wait for an official announcement from The Rolling Stones.
