Carlos Queiroz, who once coached Bafana Bafana, has left his job as head coach of Ghana by mutual agreement. The Ghana Football Association (GFA) announced the news on Thursday.
The 73-year-old Portuguese coach leaves after Ghana lost their last two Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. The Black Stars were beaten 2-0 away by Côte d’Ivoire. They then lost 4-2 at home to Gambia.
“This was not an easy decision, but both parties agreed that, under the present circumstances, ending our professional relationship was the most appropriate course of action, with the interests of Ghana, the Black Stars and Ghanaian football above everything else,” Queiroz said in an official statement.
He said the two sides held talks before they agreed to end his service agreement. He said those talks took place in a spirit of mutual respect.
The GFA thanked Queiroz for his commitment and professionalism while he led the team. The association said he helped build a stronger future for the national side. It also said he supported the growth of young Ghanaian players.
Queiroz said it was an honour to serve Ghana. He thanked the GFA and its president for trusting him with the job.
He also explained what went wrong. “Despite our commitment and efforts, the necessary conditions were not fully established; this, together with our recent performances, brought us to the decision to end this journey. I leave with respect, gratitude and pride,” he said.
The coach paid tribute to the Black Stars players. He asked Ghanaians to keep backing the team.
“Believe in these players. Protect them. Support them,” Queiroz said. “The talent and potential are there. With unity, support and the right environment, this generation can achieve great things for Ghana.”
He also thanked the fans for their passion and warmth. “I will always carry Ghana with me, with respect and affection,” he said.
Queiroz was hired to prepare Ghana for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the AFCON 2027 qualifiers. He took charge just 10 weeks before the World Cup started.
At the World Cup, Ghana went through from Group L as one of the eight best third-placed teams. Their run ended with a 1-0 loss to Colombia in the round of 32.
Before Ghana, Queiroz coached Bafana Bafana and Real Madrid. He also worked as an assistant coach at Manchester United.
The GFA said it would announce the next steps and the future technical direction of the national team in due course.
