Bontle Modiselle has said an emotional goodbye to Spotty, the dog character she played on The Masked Singer South Africa. She was revealed as the star inside the costume after she won Season 3 of the show.
The actress, dancer and TV personality shared a long message on social media after the win, Bona reported. In it, she spoke about what the colourful character came to mean to her.
“Who knew that I needed to be in a dog to bring out the dawg in me?!” she joked in the post.
She introduced herself as “Bontle Queen Elizabeth Moloi aka Spotty” and celebrated being named the Season 3 winner. Many fans were surprised when her identity was revealed.
Bontle said it was hard to keep the secret. She said the show turned out to be one of the most meaningful things she has ever done.
“Staying tight-lipped about one of the best things to happen to me is wild!” she wrote.
She chose one word to describe the whole experience, which was “liberation”. She praised the production team for giving the contestants room to show different sides of themselves.
Bontle thanked Khaya Mthethwa and Chervon Chetty for helping to bring Spotty to life. She said they helped her face things she had been scared to see and show in herself.
“You, alongside my beautiful Chervon Chetty, never allowed me to think anything less of myself and what I had to give,” she wrote. “You gifted me a confidence I truly needed. I’m so grateful to you guys.”
She said the show allowed contestants to deal with personal things. These ranged from “the unfinished dream” and “the birth of a new dream” to insecurity, safety and the courage to simply have fun.
Bontle also gave a shout-out to her fellow finalists. She called them her “Fantastic fournale” and named Khanyi Mbau, Judith Sephuma and Robot Boii among them.
“To have run the race alongside you right until the end is an honour. Beyond the outcome, one of the greatest wins was finding family in you,” she said.
She had kind words for the show’s host, Mpho Popps. “What a host!” she wrote about him.
Bontle also thanked Sibu Mabena. She said the secret the two of them had kept was finally out.
“Nja yami! Uyabona wena?! Your foresight and confidence are unmatched,” she wrote. “Many of our stories are yet to be told, but for now, our best-kept secret between us is finally out.”
Viewers spent weeks trying to guess who was behind each mask. Bontle had a message for these fans, whom she called “couch detectives”.
“To every couch detective across South Africa, you made every episode so much to watch. You guessed, you debated, you were invested, okay?! Thank you,” she said.
Bontle said letting go of the character felt bittersweet. In her final words to Spotty, she wrote: “I’m gonna miss you, but I will love you forever, from the bottom of my heart.”
