MSHOLOZI – The body of a 44-year-old woman who was swept away by floodwaters while attempting to cross a swollen stream in Msholozi, Mpumalanga, has been recovered downstream.
The woman went missing on Wednesday afternoon, 14 January 2026, after she was overpowered by strong currents while trying to cross the stream. Her body was found approximately five kilometres downstream following an intensive search operation.
Rescue teams, including police divers and local volunteers, had been combing the area since the incident was reported at around 17h00 on Wednesday. Despite challenging conditions and continued rainfall, the search continued into Thursday.
Although her name has not yet been officially released, the woman has been identified by her family. Eyewitnesses said she was on her way home after visiting a neighbour when the fast-flowing water swept her away.
Authorities have reiterated warnings of more heavy rainfall expected across Mpumalanga and are urging residents to avoid crossing flooded rivers and streams, as conditions remain extremely dangerous.
