POLOKWANE – A tragic incident unfolded in the Polokwane City Centre this afternoon when three men were struck by lightning near the railway line. Two of the men were declared dead on the scene, while a third was transported to hospital for further medical care.

Shoppers and pedestrians in the busy town area were left in shock after the sudden incident, which occurred during rapidly developing storm conditions.

Witnesses described the moment as frightening and unexpected, with people scrambling for shelter as the weather intensified.

Early reports shared among bystanders suggested the possibility of an exposed electrical cable contributing to the accident, but authorities have not yet confirmed this, and investigations are underway to establish the exact cause.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) had earlier issued a Level 2 Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Polokwane, valid from 14:00 to 23:59. Clouds have been building over the city throughout the day, with early rainfall and thunder activity signaling stronger storms than initially forecast.

SAWS has warned of several risks, including:
Localised flooding, particularly in low-lying areas and Dangerous driving conditions on major routes such as the R71, N1 and roads around the CBD.

Residents are urged to take extra precautions, avoid unnecessary travel, and stay indoors when possible. Authorities further advise avoiding low-water bridges, flooded roads, and areas with poor drainage.

Motorists and pedestrians are reminded to stay alert, as weather conditions may deteriorate rapidly.
