BELFAST — Seven people lost their lives in a devastating head-on collision on the N4 toll road between Belfast and Machadodorp late on Sunday night.
The crash occurred at around 23:30 on the Dalmanutha/Winnaarspoort section of the N4, between Milly’s and the Berg en Dal War Memorial Monument. Two sedans, an Audi and a Honda, were involved in the collision.
Emergency services confirmed that six men and one woman died at the scene. One other person sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Belfast Hospital, where they are currently receiving medical treatment.
Following the incident, the N4 was closed in both directions between Milly’s and Berg en Dal to allow emergency personnel to conduct rescue and recovery operations.
At approximately 05:36, authorities confirmed that the road had been partially reopened, with traffic moving under strict control while operations continued.
Officials once again appealed to motorists to exercise extreme caution, particularly during night-time travel when visibility is reduced.
“Roads are shared spaces, and drivers must do all in their might to prevent needless loss of life from deadly crashes,” said Macie.
Motorists are urged to avoid the N4 between Belfast and Machadodorp, make use of alternative routes, and delay travel until the road is fully and officially reopened.
