JOHANNESBURG – Sizok’thola, South Africa’s hard-hitting anti-drug television series, is set to return for its fourth season—along with the reinstatement of its former host, Xolani Khumalo.
Khumalo’s comeback follows a major legal development: the provisional withdrawal of all charges against him on April 14, 2025.
His previous tenure ended abruptly in 2023 following a fatal incident during a sting operation in Katlehong, which led to the death of alleged drug dealer Robert “Kicks” Varrie.
Khumalo subsequently faced serious charges, including murder, robbery, and malicious damage to property. The fallout resulted in his removal from the show and ignited a national debate on the ethics of reality-based crime television.
The National Prosecuting Authority’s recent decision to drop the charges—at least for now—has paved the way for his return. However, officials have confirmed that investigations into the incident remain ongoing.
Commenting on Khumalo’s return, Moja Love’s Head of Channel, Livhuwani Dagada, said:
“Xolani is known for his authentic and engaging on-air presence.
He has built a strong connection with viewers nationwide. His return reinforces the channel’s commitment to raising awareness about the scourge of drugs and their impact on communities, in collaboration with law enforcement.”
Khumalo expressed gratitude, saying,
“I am grateful to be back at Moja Love, a place that feels like home. I’ve had time to reflect, and I look forward to reconnecting with our amazing viewers and showcasing my talent to Mzansi.”
Reactions to his reinstatement have been swift and divided. Supporters see Khumalo as a fearless crusader in South Africa’s war on drugs, while critics caution that the show’s confrontational style risks blurring the line between justice and vigilantism.
Sizok’thola airs on Moja Love, DStv Channel 157.
