VW Polo driver speeds off after stealing petrol in Namakgale

NAMAKGALE-Petrol attendant was left shocked when a motorist in a silver VW Polo with registration number BNF 277 L drove off without paying for petrol at Tshelagape Filling Station in Namakgale.

The incident was caught by the petrol station CCTV camera.

The driver waited for the attendant to fill up the tank with R856.36 and then sped off on Thursday afternoon at around 06:13.

As the fuel price continues to climb, more thieves are driving off from filling stations without paying.

Henry van der Merwe, the national chair of the South African Petroleum Retailers Association (SAPRA), says there’s a correlation between fuel price increases and the frequency of petrol station drive-offs.

“The higher the petrol price, the more frequent we see it”, Van der Merwe tells CapeTalk.
