THOHOYANDOU-The Vhavenda nation and the Mphephu Ramabulana royal family are in mourning following the passing of Khadzi Vho Phophi Mphephu Ramabulana, a prominent and revered figure in the royal family. She was 90 years old.
News of Khadzi Vho Phophi’s passing spread across the nation on Sunday, October 27.
While rumors circulated early in the day, her passing was only confirmed by the family spokesperson, Mr. Ntsieni Ramabulana, in the evening.
Mr. Ramabulana shared that Khadzi Vho Phophi had been unwell for some time. “I just received a call informing me of her passing,” he said, adding that while details are limited, the family plans to release a full statement.
Khadzi Vho Phophi held a central role within the Vhavenda royal family, with responsibilities that extended beyond traditional duties.
She was a custodian of royal customs and, notably, had the final authority in the selection of an heir to the throne. Her guidance was invaluable, especially now, as the family is engaged in a longstanding court case to decide the rightful successor.
The succession dispute between cousins Toni Mphephu Ramabulana and Masindi Mphephu Ramabulana has been ongoing for over a decade and is currently before the Limpopo High Court in Polokwane.
A close family member, who preferred to remain anonymous, expressed confidence that Khadzi Vho Phophi’s passing would not affect the court proceedings.
“The old woman had run her race, and it is her time to rest. She was at an advanced age, and fortunately, she left everything in order, so the case will progress smoothly, even in her absence,” he said.
As the Vhavenda nation mourns the loss of a wise and dedicated leader, they hold on to her legacy and guidance, hoping her contributions will continue to shape the royal family’s future.
