NKOWANKOWA-Grannies International Football Tournament 2023 commenced at Nkowankowa Stadium in the Greater Tzaneen Local Municipality on Sunday, March 26.
The highly anticipated tournament kicked off with a Street Parade, followed by a Teams Parade ahead of the formal proceedings and concluded with an opening match between Nkowankowa Vakhegula Vakhegula V/S USA.
The Tournament will run until the 29 of March with participants from the USA, Malawi, Lesotho, Zambia, France, Zimbabwe, Mpumalanga, and Gauteng amongst others.
MEC for Provincial Treasury Seaparo Sekoati on behalf of the Premier of the Province joined by MEC of Sport, Arts and Culture Mme. Nakedi Kekana, MEC for Social Development Mme Nandi Ndalani, SAFA representatives, Sports Confederations, District and Local Municipality Dignitaries and Fans who filled the Nkowankowa Stadium full witnessed this historic event on home soil.
The initiative by Mama Beka Foundation is the first to happen in the Province and the country, aimed at using Sport to physically strengthen Elderly Women and raise their status in the community.
Vakhegula-Vakhegula opened their campaign with a 3-2 loss against USA.
