Two undocumented foreign nationals arrested for digging precious minerals in Giyani

GIYANI -The Multidisciplinary Forces through High-Density Operation Vala Umgodi have arrested two male suspects aged 22 and 23 years for illegal mining and contravention of the immigration act in Mopani District.

It is reported that the members of the SAPS Tactical Response Team and the Public Order Police Unit on Wednesday 24 April 2024  arrested the two foreign national males for digging precious minerals underground at Nhlaniki illegal mining sites outside Giyani in Mopani District.

The Police also confiscated mining equipment that was used in the commission of illegal mining activities including two spades and two picks as well as a bag containing the precious minerals.

In a separate incident during the execution of the  Operation conducted on Wednesday 24 April 2024 at Mahwelereng in Waterberg District, a total number of five suspects were arrested for various offences that included possession of illicit cigarettes, selling of contaminated foodstuffs and contravention of the immigration act.

Immigration Officers from the Department of Home Affairs have processed all the foreign national accused persons for direct deportation back to their countries of origin.

The suspects are expected to appear before Various Magistrate’s Court in due course.
