Two Giyani barbers killed in Friday shooting spree

GIYANI-Two Giyani barbers were killed in a shooting spree at Masingita Mall in Giyani last night on Friday May 27.

It is alleged that the suspects, aged 37 and 43 entered the hair salon at about 19h30. One of the suspects, who was later identified as a Security Guard, produced a pistol and allegedly shot the four victims at close range.

The barber man died instantly and one of his companions fled into the nearby bushes after he was shot. The other two victims were rushed to the hospital for medical attention. The body of the victim who fled into the bushes was found this morning after he apparently collapsed and succumbed to the injuries.

The deceased were identified as Andrew Makhubele, Hairdresser aged 32 and Herman Baloyi aged 33.

The Provincial Commissioner had earlier ordered the Mopani Task Team to work around the clock to trace the killers and bring them to book. The Team did exactly as instructed and managed to apprehend the suspects at Mapayeni village under Giyani policing area.

The firearm believed to be the one that was used in the attack, was also recovered.

Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has commended the members for arresting two suspects within a day after they allegedly shot the hairdresser, his two companions and a customer.

The motive for the incident will be determined by the unfolding police investigations.

The suspects are expected to appear in Giyani magistrate court soon.
