Three suspects arrested while trying to sell Pangolin

POLOKWANE – The Provincial Endangered Species Unit in Limpopo has apprehended three suspects between the ages of 25 and 50 after they were allegedly found in possession of a pangolin, a critically endangered species.

They were charged with wildlife trafficking and contravening the National Environmental Management: Biodiversity, 2004 (Act 10 of 2004)

The trio appeared before the Senwabarwana Magistrate’s Court on Monday, September 04.

On Sunday 03 September, the members of the Provincial Endangered Species Unit received a tip-off regarding suspicious activities in the area. Acting swiftly on this information, the team conducted an operation in this area resulting in the arrest of three suspects who were allegedly walking on foot and trying to sell the Pangolin at Bochum.

“We would like to express gratitude to the vigilant citizens who provided the tip-off that led to the successful operation. The collaboration of concerned community members is invaluable in the fight against wildlife crime.

Furthermore, we wish to remind the public of the importance of reporting any suspicious activities related to wildlife trafficking and other environmental crimes,” Concludes Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe.
