MOKOPANE – A 33-year-old taxi driver has been arrested after allegedly offering a R200 bribe to an officer to avoid arrest for drunk driving. The suspect was detained at Mahwelereng SAPS.
The driver, who was transporting passengers from Tembisa to Limpopo, was stopped after overtaking on a barrier line around a curve.
Upon being tested, he was found to be under the influence of alcohol, recording a breath alcohol concentration of 0.41mg/l — far exceeding the legal limit for professional drivers of 0.10mg/l.
In an attempt to avoid arrest, the driver allegedly offered R200 as a “cold drink” bribe to the officers. He now faces additional charges of bribery on top of drunk driving.
Authorities confirmed that this is not an isolated case. Members of the National Traffic Police arrested an additional six drivers in Limpopo for attempted bribery over the same period. This brings the total number of motorists arrested for bribery in the province to nine.
During a heightened law enforcement operation conducted over two days (25 and 26 April 2025), 170 people were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol in Limpopo.
Law enforcement agencies continue to urge motorists to obey road laws and warn that bribery attempts will lead to harsher penalties.
