PRETORIA- Higher Education and Training Minister Blade Nzimande, has warned that students who are found to have illegally benefitted from National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS), will face criminal charges.

Nzimande gave the update for the 2022 academic year on Friday, June 24, in Pretoria.

The minister indicated that his department is working closely with the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) to ascertain how students whose applications were approved despite not qualifying have been approved.

Allegedly, senior government officials have children who are receiving NSFAS funding. Moreover, the loophole is believed to be caused by Sassa processes.

“Government cannot allow NSFAS money to be abused. Those who are abusing it must be nailed because they are stealing from the poor. I am told there are too many”, Nzimande said.
