TZANEEN- The police discharged spray guns to disperse and used force to drag ravaged members of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) out during the third GTM council meeting, after the party members disruption on Thursday, February 24.

The EFF’s tussle with law enforcement officers left one of its female councillors badly wounded in one eye and was immediately rushed to the hospital, while the party’s Exco member, Cllr Clifford Letsoalo’s body, was dragged out against the floor by the Police.

The relentless EFF councillors led by MMC Letsoalo and the party’s chief whip Cllr Ramathoka, whisked their way into the council meeting after being dragged out by both the police and sergeant at arms to continue with the disruptions through songs and the speaker had to call the police again to have them removed.

The disruption came after EFF’s motion of no confidence levelled against the council speaker, Cllr Sanie Tiba was rejected by the council’s whip Cllr Given Malatji, who continued to state on behalf of a council’s majority that they still have confidence in the speaker.

Tensions became high when EFF councillors argued that the motion be referred to the next council for debate before the house could be divided for voting, however the suggestion was downplayed by the ruling party’s bloc labeling it as a waste of time.

Speaking to Tzaneen Voice, EFF Cllr Letsoalo, said they are not happy with how the police treated them and further stated that they referred the matter to their party’s headquarters for guidance.

Attempts to get hold of the council’s whip Cllr Malatji for response were not successful in times of publishing.
