POLOKWANE-Recent data released by Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) paints a grim picture of the country’s economic landscape, with unemployment rates reaching a staggering 32.9%.

This represents an increase of 0.8% between Quarter 4 of 2023 and Quarter 1 of 2024, signaling a concerning trend of joblessness that continues to plague the nation.

The regional breakdown of unemployment rates reveals stark disparities across the provinces, highlighting the uneven impact of economic challenges on different parts of the country. Here is a closer look at the unemployment rates by province:

  1. Western Cape – Despite being the province with the lowest unemployment rate at 26.1%, the Western Cape still faces significant challenges in generating employment opportunities for its residents.
