Six illegal immigrants arrested for being in possession of precious metals, and unlicenced firearm in Giyani

GIYANI-Six male suspects arrested in connection with possession of suspected precious metals (stones), Contravention of the Immigration Act and possession of an unlicensed firearm with ammunition on Monday 21 August 2023 at about 09:30.

The suspects aged between 24 and 48 were arrested at Makosha village under the Giyani Policing area after Police’ received information about six males who were travelling in a Grey Ford Ranger bakkie that was loaded with suspicious items.

The Team operationalised the information together with Giyani Public Order Policing (POPS) and the Directorate for Priority Crimes and Investigations (HAWKS).

The motor vehicle fitting the description was spotted driving in the vicinity and was tactically approached and stopped.

Police allegedly searched the motor vehicle with six occupants and . during the search, one Lesotho National was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. Upon further search, Police’ discovered 10 bags containing precious metals or stones, a generator and a big drill.

The suspects could not be able to account for the origin of the precious metals and other items and were immediately placed under arrest on the spot. Upon further investigations, Police’ discovered that three Zimbabweans and two Lesotho Nationals were in the Country illegally without proper documentation.

A Ford Ranger bakkie and precious metals were confiscated by the police during the arrest for further investigations.

The suspects are expected to appear before the Giyani Magistrate court soon facing charges of possession of suspected precious metals (stones), Contravention of the Immigration Act and possession of an unlicensed firearm with ammunition.
