TZANEEN – On Day 13 of an 1700 km extraordinary mission from Burgersfort to Cape Town, Maxwell Ndou (24)— affectionately known as “The Goat” — stands on the edge of history, even as he battles a knee injury threatening to sideline his heroic journey.
A proud employee of Shoprite Lephalale, Ndou is one-third of the powerhouse GAUTA BMX cycling team that has taken the nation by storm.
Alongside Karabo Mokowo from Riba Cross and Mahlakwane Gauta from Ga Mathabatha-Makgoba, Ndou is pedaling from Burgersfort in Limpopo to Cape Town, a symbolic journey to raise awareness about Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and ignite youth-led social change.
With over 1,350 kilometers already behind them and just 350 kilometers remaining, the trio currently rests in Laingsburg, a Karoo town standing between them and their final stop — Cape Town.
But this pause was no luxury break. After experiencing discomfort and pain in his knee, Maxwell received medical attention at Mediclinic Worcester, where Dr. Fourie recommended two days of rest.
All three cyclists also underwent physiotherapy and are scheduled to resume their journey on Monday, 14 April.
Despite the injury, Ndou’s spirit remains unshaken.
“This journey has always been about more than just reaching Cape Town,” said the team. “It’s about sending a strong message against Gender-Based Violence and inspiring young people to be part of the change. We are determined to finish what we started, safely and together.”
Communities, corporates, and everyday South Africans have rallied behind the trio, amplifying their call to end GBV and encourage active citizenship.
Maxwell’s resilience embodies what this campaign is truly about — not just endurance, but purpose.
As a worker at Shoprite, his journey reflects the everyday South African rising above circumstance to fight for a better, safer country.
The cyclists aim to reach Cape Town by Wednesday, 16 April, and with each pedal stroke, they carry the hopes of thousands who believe in their mission.
Their progress has even caught the attention of Limpopo Premier Dr. Phophi Ramathuba, who praised their unity and determination.
As Maxwell rests and prepares to push forward, one thing is clear: injury or not, “The Goat” is made of something rare. His grit, alongside his teammates’ unwavering support, will be remembered as a defining chapter in this youth-led movement for change.
Supporters are encouraged to continue following their inspiring ride on social media and lend their voices to the cause.
