BURGERSFORT – Sello “Supercharge” Phala from Riba Cross is solidifying his reputation as one of the top pool players in the region, achieving a remarkable milestone. Phala has been selected to represent South Africa in the 2024 Blackball International World Championships, also known as the 2024 Hawley Cup Championship.
The prestigious competition will take place in Bridlington, United Kingdom, from October 11-20.
The news of Phala’s selection was officially conveyed to him on August 6 by Vincent Pillay, the President of Blackball South Africa. Phala expressed his gratitude towards his mentor, known as Master P, crediting him for his significant improvement in the game.
“He fine-tuned me into one of the best players, turning my weaknesses into strengths,” Phala said. “I am now confident and enthusiastic to represent my country with pride. I’m still eager to learn more and achieve greater heights in this sport.”
Vincent Pillay highlighted the significance of the Blackball Championships, noting its recognition by the World Pool Association (WPA) and its alignment with the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The tournament is organized by Blackball International, the global governing body for the blackball discipline of pool.
South Africa’s team will be well-represented at the championships, with approximately 53 members, including players and officials, making the journey to the UK. Pillay mentioned that the team will compete across various categories, including masters, females, men seniors, and under-15, under-18, and under-23 divisions.
Phala’s upcoming participation in the championships marks a significant achievement not just for him but for the entire region, inspiring local players and proving that dedication and mentorship can lead to international success.
