NZHELELE– A security officer employed at Mutuwafhethu Primary School in Dopeni village, Nzhelele, was arrested on the evening of Wednesday, 28 August 2024.

The officer was found in possession of items belonging to the school’s feeding scheme, leading to his immediate apprehension.

The arrest comes after a tip-off led authorities to investigate the ongoing disappearance of food supplies intended for the school’s feeding program, which provides meals to hundreds of learners daily.

Community members had long suspected that the thefts were not isolated incidents, and allegations have surfaced that the officer may have been involved in this illicit activity for an extended period.

The security officer was entrusted with safeguarding the school premises, and it is deeply concerning that someone in such a position could breach that trust.

The suspect is expected to appear in court soon, facing charges related to theft and breach of trust. The school’s feeding scheme has been temporarily disrupted as a result of the theft, but efforts are being made to restore normal operations and ensure that learners continue to receive their meals.

Local residents have expressed their outrage over the incident, calling for stricter measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future. “It’s heartbreaking to think that someone would steal from a program meant to feed our children,” said one concerned parent.

Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine the full extent of the theft and whether other individuals may have been involved.

The Department of Education has also been notified and is expected to take additional steps to reinforce security measures at schools across the region.
