TZANEEN – The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Level 4 severe thunderstorm warning for Tzaneen, Phalaborwa, and Hoedspruit, effective from 13:00 today.

The warning signals a potential threat to life and property due to severe weather conditions expected to impact the Mopani region and surrounding areas this afternoon and evening.

According to SAWS, severe thunderstorms accompanied by heavy rainfall, strong winds, and hail are expected.

These conditions may lead to damage to infrastructure, settlements, and agricultural fields, while flooding of roads, low-lying areas, and bridges could cause significant disruptions to daily activities and pose a danger to residents.

Travel disruptions are likely as flooding and strong winds may lead to road closures and interruptions to public transport. Power outages may also occur due to lightning and wind damage.

In addition, hailstorms could damage vehicles, rooftops, and crops, posing economic and safety challenges for both urban and rural communities.

Residents and visitors are urged to stay updated on the latest weather alerts, avoid traveling in affected areas unless absolutely necessary, secure loose outdoor items such as garden furniture and tools, remain indoors during thunderstorms and away from windows, and follow guidance from local authorities and emergency services.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and have advised the public to take all necessary precautions to ensure safety as the severe weather approaches.
