AUCKLAND PARK – The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) has addressed concerns regarding the absence of its Afrikaans television news bulletin over the weekend, assuring the public that the broadcast has not been discontinued.
In a statement issued by SABC, the corporation confirmed that the Afrikaans news bulletin did not air in its usual timeslot on Saturday and Sunday due to a scheduling error.
The SABC expressed regret for the disruption and emphasized that this was a mistake, not a strategic decision to deprioritize Afrikaans news.
“We acknowledge the error and are treating it with the seriousness it deserves. Internal measures are being taken to address the oversight,” the statement said.
SABC assured the public that there is no intention to discontinue or reduce the importance of Afrikaans news.
The Afrikaans television news bulletin will continue to air as scheduled from Monday to Friday at 20:30 on S3, while the weekend editions at 18:00 on Saturdays and Sundays will remain unchanged on SABC 2.
The broadcaster reiterated its commitment to delivering news and content in all official languages, in line with its public service mandate. Furthermore, SABC is working on a broader strategy to enhance its language offerings, including Afrikaans, as part of its content strategy for the new financial year.
The SABC extended a heartfelt apology for any distress caused, especially within Afrikaans-speaking communities, and reassured viewers that their concerns are being taken seriously.
