KGAPANE-Road D1380 which is one of the busiest roads in Kgapane, Greater Letaba, between the former Modjadji College and Kgapane hospital has become a nightmare and a threat to both pedestrians and motorists.
The hazard comes as a result of persistent heavy rainfall that has caused a deep trench on a portion of the road. Although the area is cordoned off, unsuspecting road users run the risk of falling into the trench, or in the worst-case scenario, being hit by a car while trying to navigate around the barricades.
In light of this development, scores of residents have taken to social media to vent their frustration with some denouncing the local municipality for not stepping up and alerting the relevant department and addressing the problem because the barricades do not seem to be serving any purpose.
Residents said what is even more concerning is that by-passers can oftentimes be seen removing the traffic barricades away from the road posing a bigger risk to unsuspecting people who use the road, particularly at night.
The publication contacted Greater Letaba Municipality media liaison Lovers Maenetja who said that the road is not the municipality’s jurisdiction but the responsibility lies with Roads Agency Limpopo (RAL).
The Department of Public Works Roads and Infrastructure media liaison Witness Tiva promised to liaise with RAL to mitigate the problem.
