‘Rape suspect’ cornered, stabbed and burnt in mob justice attack

THOHOYANDOU-A 29-year-old man was attacked and set on fire by a mob after being accused of raping a woman at Tshikhudini village in Thohoyandou.

It is alleged that the man visited the homestead of a Female Victim, where he assaulted and attempted to rape her. However, the woman was able to overpower him and the suspect fled the scene.

“The Female Victim raised the alarm in the village and the community responded swiftly, mobilised and started tracking the suspect until he was caught not far from the victim’s home.

The Furious community villagers caught the suspect, attacked him with various objects and set him alight.

“The police were alerted about the incident and responded quickly together with medical emergency services. When they arrived at the scene, they found the burnt body of the suspect. The crowd had dispersed,” he said.   

Provincial police commissioner Lt-Gen Thembi Hadebe condemned the incident.

“The police will continue to deal harshly with members of the community who are continuing to participate in these irresponsible acts,” said Hadebe

She instructed a special task team to track down the suspects.
