In addressing them the mayor called the protesters to calm and acceded to the demands of water and electricity and further promised that the district municipality will send water tankers to the affected areas on Wednesday.
However, violence ensued when the resident demanded that the water tankers be sent immediately not the following day and that the mayor should tell the police not shoot them.
Executive Mayor Shayi and his security had to be whisked away to the car by the police from the quarrelling residents, who then threw stones at his state vehicle demanding immediate supply of water.
The Mopani District Municipality confirmed that the Nkowankowa water scheme has been restored, but not yet stabilized because of the low reservoir levels.
As of Wednesday, the R36 protest has since stopped after the district mayor’s visit and the road is now open.
