PRETORIA – Elia Maeko, one of the suspects accused in the murder of five-year-old Ditebogo Junior Phalane, appeared in the Pretoria North Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, for his third bail application.
Maeko, 37, from Mphagani village under Greater Giyani, is charged alongside co-accused Ali Sithole (30) and Nido Gumbe (29) in connection with the tragic hijacking incident that claimed the young boy’s life in Soshanguve on May 10, 2024.
The bail hearing, which had previously been postponed from April 9, was once again adjourned to allow for further legal proceedings. The State continues to oppose bail, emphasizing the gravity of the charges and citing concerns over public safety.
During his court appearance, Maeko described himself as a taxi driver and salon owner, claiming to be the sole breadwinner supporting both his immediate and extended family members. Despite his plea for release, this marks Maeko’s third failed attempt to secure bail. His last application, withdrawn in September 2024, followed reported threats made to the families of the accused.
Sithole and Gumbe also face serious charges, including murder and hijacking, after allegedly targeting a Toyota Hiluxin a crime that ended in the devastating loss of young Ditebogo, a case that has since sparked widespread public outrage.
The case has been postponed to August 27, 2025, pending further investigation and a decision by the Director of Public Prosecutions. As the nation continues to mourn and demand justice, all eyes remain on the legal process ahead.
