TSHWANE – The Ministry of Police has strongly condemned a disturbing incident in which a police trainee was allegedly raped by an instructor at the South African Police Service (SAPS) Training Academy in Tshwane.
The assault is believed to have occurred on Tuesday, 6 May 2025. Following the report, the suspect was swiftly arrested and is scheduled to appear in court today. The victim is receiving urgent medical care and continues to be supported with emotional and psychological counselling by the Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit.
Minister of Police, Senzo Mchunu, expressed outrage at the incident, calling it a “disgraceful abuse of authority” and a betrayal of the SAPS’s core values.
“To prey on a young recruit who has chosen to serve our nation through the SAPS is both reprehensible and inexcusable,” said Minister Mchunu. “It undermines the integrity of the police service and disrespects the thousands of officers who serve honourably each day.”
The Minister welcomed the swift arrest and removal of the instructor, calling for a thorough investigation led by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID), which has since taken over the case.
The Ministry has called for internal disciplinary action to proceed without delay and stressed that “no one is above the law.”
The case continues to spark national outrage, raising concerns about safety, accountability, and the treatment of trainees within SAPS institutions.
