Police Release Identity of Pensioner Burnt to Ashes Allegedly by Grandson, a Parolee, in Tshakhuma

TSHAKUMA – In a heartbreaking tragedy, police have identified the elderly woman who perished in a horrific fire in Tshakhuma, Vhembe District, last Thursday. The 93-year-old victim, whose identity has been confirmed as Koko Madzivhandila was allegedly murdered by her 24-year-old grandson, a parolee.

According to reports, the suspect intentionally set fire to the house while Koko Madzivhandila was inside, preventing her from escaping. Tragically, she did not survive the blaze. The fire completely consumed the residence, leaving behind only the remains of the elderly woman.

The suspect was arrested by the police shortly after the incident and has already appeared in court. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

In a visit to the grieving family on Thursday, Limpopo Premier, Dr. Phophi Ramathuba, expressed her condolences and offered support. During her address to the family and local community members, Dr. Ramathuba also took the opportunity to issue a stern warning to drug dealers, emphasizing that illegal drug activities would no longer be tolerated in the region.

“Let this be a warning: your days are numbered. We cannot allow drugs to destroy our youth and communities,” Dr. Ramathuba declared, stressing the need for heightened vigilance against drug-related crimes. She further instructed law enforcement agencies to increase efforts, especially targeting establishments suspected of selling drugs to young people.

The Premier’s tough stance on drug-related crimes has been met with widespread support from the local community, who have long expressed concerns about the impact of drugs on safety and well-being in the area. Many residents voiced hope that the intensified crackdown will help restore peace and order in Tshakhuma and its surrounding areas.

As the investigation into the tragic death of Koko Madzivhandila continues, the community remains in shock over the loss of a beloved matriarch, while also hoping for justice and a safer environment moving forward.
