Limpopo Police have released the identity of the 47-year-old police sergeant, Leah Mosalofi Malebye, who was tragically murdered by her boyfriend.

The sergeant, attached to the Rooiberg Police Station in the Waterberg District, was found dead on the morning of January 26, 2025.

According to initial reports, Sergeant Malebye returned home on the evening of January 25 with her 43-year-old boyfriend. The next morning, her lifeless body was discovered by her 6-year-old grandson.

At the time, both the boyfriend and the sergeant’s vehicle were missing.

Neighbours immediately alerted authorities, and emergency medical personnel confirmed her death at the scene. Shortly after, her private vehicle was discovered abandoned about 50 kilometers away from her home, along Thabazimbi Road near Koedoeskop.

The suspect, who is believed to be the boyfriend, handed himself over to the police at Klipgat in North West Province during the early hours of Thursday, January 30, 2025.

He was promptly arrested. While the motive for the murder remains unclear, domestic violence is suspected as a possible contributing factor.

Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, the Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, expressed her satisfaction with the swift arrest of the suspect. “I am delighted that within days of the senseless killing of our officer, the police moved swiftly and managed to arrest this callous criminal. I am confident that the investigation team will present a watertight case before the court to ensure that the suspect receives a harsher sentence for his senseless act,” she said.

The memorial and funeral service details for the late Sergeant Malebye will be communicated in due course.
